The challenge

The University of Glasgow’s School of Veterinary Medicine and their incumbent waste contractor were struggling to find a sustainable solution to the 400 tonnes of animal bedding waste which was being produced and going to landfill, year after year.

Sending this waste to landfill was unsustainable and becoming increasingly expensive. While the University had a robust waste management process, they had been unable to find a way of diverting this waste stream away from landfill to recycling.

The solution

Following investigations, they identified a compliant, cost effective and sustainable third party solution that enabled the University to recycle all of the waste material through an alternative method of disposal, using natural regeneration processes.

A transportation solution was also identified offering further opportunity to reduce the University’s costs and carbon footprint, preventing 70 tonnes of CO2te polluting the atmosphere.
