Sitemark identified opportunities to save £32k per annum
The challenge
Northumbria Foundation NHS Trust was looking for a review of its recycling and waste services to explore whether it could implement improvements to recycling and identify cost savings on the waste budget, without compromising the service.

Sitemark identifed that Northumbria Trust’s largest single cost in recycling and waste was the clinical waste transport; suggestions were made as to how to reduce this.
Sitemark identified opportunities to save £32k per annum for the Trust by rescheduling collections and confirming remaining capacity would sustain waste volumes.
Further efficiencies in offensive waste handling present an opportunity for savings of £80,000 per year.
Sitemark recommended that the Trust considers a consistent labelling scheme at all sites with the use of colour for different materials, to help both staff and visitors understand what goes into which bin.
Within the scope of the report Northumbria has been assessed against both regional, type of Trust and national peers; this has provided an indication of its performance and what best practice in its arena looks like.
