The challenge

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) was looking to benchmark its recycling and waste processes in preparation for the upcoming tender. This would allow for comparisons against similar facilities in both sector and region. It also wanted improvement opportunities to help reach environmental goals and increase service effectiveness.

The solution

Sitemark’s independent benchmarking review provided an excellent match as a solution. Through the process of benchmarking the services and examining on-site processes, strategies could be presented to improve the recycling and waste regime both on a site-by-site and national level.

The results

Sitemark provides independent best practice benchmarking of facilities management services, helping clients improve standards, reduce costs and ensure best value for money.

Sitemark undertook site evaluations and data analyses to understand the recycling and waste process on both a physical and numerical level.

18 specific recommendations and 41 tactics were provided from the review which will increase recycling, reduce costs, and improve sustainability. These ideas can be implemented both straight away and through their tender process.

The review catered to LSTM pre-tender requirements, providing a greater understanding of the current waste regime and a platform to launch significant improvements across all metrics. It also considered LSTM unique position as both an educational and laboratorial facility, with significant volumes of clinical material.

Sitemark identified clear savings opportunities to offset waste stream values against costs of at least 40% of the annual budget.

Within the scope of the review the benchmarking process confirmed that a strong “zero to landfill” policy was in place and being adhered to.

Sitemark identified key areas where volumes of recycling and waste material could be reduced and where a waste as an asset mentality could be applied. There will be opportunities to reduce the costs of removing materials with a significant commodity value.
