The challenge

Barts Health NHS Trust was looking to find a partner to support its ambition to radically change the way that recycling & waste is handled across the estate of 5 acute hospitals. A market analysis of current methods and possible solutions was required. As was advising the Trust on advanced phraseology to move forward with its new strategy and vision for recycling & waste and environmental sustainability.

Sitemark’s independent recycling and waste benchmarking review and strategy writing support programme proved the perfect vehicle with which to take the Trust forward. All processes were reviewed along with associated costs and 3rd party management structures applied to the solutions.

Sitemark confirmed that Barts Health NHS Trust is achieving just over 60% offensive waste rates via Tiger bag usage – an amazing achievement.
Opportunities exist across the Trust to divert considerably higher tonnages to Dry Mixed Recycling and move the recycling rate to around 51%.
A tender writing process followed as a result of the benchmarking findings which will allow the Trust to test the market for recycling and waste services and all the supporting requirements, such as consoles and liners used.
Sitemark identified clear cut opportunities to turn some materials into assets across the facilities and these funds can be re-invested in other sustainability projects.
Within the scope of the review the benchmarking review proved that the Trust has strong controls over front line stream costs.
Both parties also engaged with NHS Shared Business Services who benefit from the 3rd party engagement in the recycling and waste tender process.
